If you're looking for that unique hairstyle for an upcoming special event and want to pay homage to your favourite athlete, musician, celebrity or anyone else for that matter, there may be no better place than the Nariko Hair Style salon in Brazil.
The owner of the little hair studio in the coastal city of Sao Vicente just south of bustling Sao Paulo has been etching profiles of the famous onto the sides and backs of heads for about a year or so now. All clients have to do is bring in a picture of a favourite celeb and the owner of the salon, who goes by the artistic name "Nariko," will get busy carving a likeness onto the client's scalp.
On Wednesday (May 6), 15-year-old Luis Fernando stopped by the studio to get his favourite soccer player, Barcelona's Neymar, cut into his hair.
Neymar, the current captain for the national Brazilian soccer squad and got his soccer career started for the local club, Santos FC, is a favourite of clients who come here for the unique styling that Nariko offers.
Nariko told Reuters one of the best parts about his job is inspiring young people to get into the hairstyling profession, just like famous athletes inspire youth to get into their sport of choice.
"It makes me really happy. I don't know how to explain my happiness. Because Neymar inspires a lot of young people to get into soccer and with the art work I'm doing these days there are a lot of young people who want to know about the profession (cutting hair). They're focused on it. They come in here with questions; they want to take a course. And that is really gratifying," Nariko said.
Nariko is no hairstyling novice. Both his grandfather and an uncle were barbers and they motivated him to get into the profession at a very young age.
Now 27-years-old, he is licensed and owns his own salon and has made a name for himself as a skilled artisan tending the salon. The "Nariko Hair Style" Facebook page had just under 35,000 likes as of May 6.
When it comes to cutting famous mugs, Nariko starts with a regular hair clipper, or buzzer, that he uses to cut the image freehand, without any stencilling. He does this by simply eyeballing an image, either from a piece of paper or a smartphone image, and then proceeds to get busy at work.
Once the basic outline is there, he carefully uses a razorblade to cut in the more detailed elements of the design.
He can even add elements of colour if the client wants it.
The image of Neymar and the FC Barcelona crest cut into Fernando's hair took Nariko about three and a half hours to complete.
He says his work is just like that of any other artist.
"The thing is, we do art here, you know? Just like there are pictures and paintings and it is called art. Our work is art too. I think it is worth something," he said.
A simple haircut at Nariko Hair Style runs between R$20 to R$50 reais ($6.55 to $16.40 dollars). But a face on the head runs a bit more; between R$120 and R$140 reais ($40 to $45 dollars) depending on its complexity.
And there is no shortage of clients willing to pay for that distinctive look, he says. And like most hairdressers, Nariko says he has his regulars who come in every week to freshen up their look.
This was Fernando's second time getting his favourite soccer player cut into his head. So why does he it?
"Because I'm a fan (of Neymar). I got his picture cut into my hair once before. I'm doing it again. Hey played on my team, which is Santos. Now he's with Barcelona. I like him. He inspires me. I like to watch him play," Fernando said.
Other images Nariko has done include hip hop artist Snoop Dogg, Jesus Christ and even a replica of Da Vinci's The Last Supper.
Maybe getting a portrait of Mom etched into your head could be the perfect way to honour her just in time for this Mothers' Day.
