Interactive Sample Book (ISB). Sample #1: Dynamic patterns evolving trough time.

00:26
The ISB project was started, as a practice based research project, with the aim of exploring and communicating some of the possibilities within interactive textiles. The applications for interactive textiles range from medical applications to architecture, and from the fashion industry to costume design. In relation to the sample book, focus will be on texture, lightning and senses in relation to integrated decoration and function primarily to indoors applications. The result of the project is a number of interactive textiles, to be gathered in an interactive sample book (ISB), in a similar way as the sample books of wallpapers one can take home from the shop and choose from. In other words, it is a kind of display material, which in a simple manner can illustrate how different techniques and smart materials work. The sample book will display a number of possibilities where computer technology, smart materials and textiles are mixed to such an extent that the textile can react to different kinds of input from the surrounding world. The book will function as an inspirational tool for designers, students, cultural institutions and companies that wish to start working with some of the possibilities that are within interactive textiles. In other words, the ISB should facilitate the following: - The generation of ideas: by making each textile sample fun, aesthetic and surprising, by making it tell a story and stimulate the senses, the ISB will stimulate new ideas. This video presents the concept #1: Touch generated shape change Story: The textile that can move This sample combines Shape Memory Materials with touch sensors and Priyas plissé fabrics. Description: Each Shape Memory thread is connected to a power source, which will heat up the actual thread when activated. The threads are more or less hidden under an overlaying fabric. Each thread forms a series of patterns, that all change shape at the same time when the thread is activated. By using several threads, different patterns are created at different times. The designer activates the different threads by touching certain areas of the sample. To make the shape memory thread regain its original shape, it has to be stretched out. Colours are hidden by the plissé fabrics, and then revealed by the movement in the fabric, just like a peacock. Buttons or glitter can also be used to create decorative effects. Idea: Shape change, movement, and reversibility; The textile is organic and alive. Senses: Sight and Touch. Input: Touch Temperature change. Output: Movement Shape change. Project partners Elisabeth Heimdal is educated as textile engineer from Borås, Sweden and has previously been working with smart textiles as part of her study. Projects about smart textiles include knitting with optical fibres, and developing a stress monitoring system for Danish soldiers. Torben Lenau, who is supervisor on the project, is Associate Professor at the Department of Management Engineering at DTU, and has a broad experience with materials, among other smart materials and their use in product development. He has worked on The Beetle project, which investigates and tries to imitate the colourful surfaces of beetles, and has developed the material website www.designinsite.dk. Priya Mani is a professional Indian textile designer, based in Copenhagen. Trained at the NID (National Institute of Design) in India, she runs her own design studio in Copenhagen Marija Andonovska is doing her master thesis at meddialogi, Aalborg university. - The conviction that smart materials can be used: by providing a technical insight into smart materials and interactive textiles, it will facilitate their actual use.

Dell Precision T7600 Product Demo

02:31
This demo video of a Dell Precision T7600 with AMD FirePro Graphics was created using SolidWorks Composer. SolidWorks Composer enables you to easily show all features within a product. It uses CAD data that has already been created and connects it to the end product, thus eliminating the disconnect found by using photos or screen shots. The end result is a high quality manual or video that viewers can get right away because it is visual. This video is an example of how a company such as Dell and AMD can use SolidWorks Composer to show their products.

Creating an asp.net mvc application 2. Understand how mvc request is processed as apposed to webform request Creating an mvc application: 1. Open visual studio 2. Click File - New Project 3. Select "Web" from "Installed Templates" section 4. Select ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Application 5. Set Name="MVCDemo" 6. Click OK 7. Select "Empty" template. Select "Razor" as the ViewEngine. There are 2 built in view engines - Razor and ASPX. Razor is preferred by most mvc developers. We will discuss about Razor view engine in detail in a later video session. 8. At this point you should have an mvc application created. Notice that in the solution explorer, you have several folders - Models, Views, Controllers etc. As the names suggest these folders are going to contain Models, Views, and Controllers. We will discuss about Models, Views, and Controllers in a later video session. Now let's add a controller to our project. 1. Right Click on "Controllers" folder 2. Select Add - Controller 3. Set Controller Name = HomeController 4. Leave rest of the defaults and click "Add" We should have HomeController.cs added to "Controllers" folder. At this point run the application by pressing CTRL+F5. Notice that you get an error. To fix this error, we need to add a view with name, "Index". We will discuss about views in detail in a later video session. Let's fix it another way. The following is the function that is automatically added to HomeController class public ActionResult Index() { return View(); } Change the return type of Index() function from "ActionResult" to "string", and return string "Hello from MVC Application" instead of View(). public string Index() { return "Hello from MVC Application"; } Run the application and notice that, the string is rendered on the screen. When you run the application, by default it is using built-in asp.net development server. Let's use IIS, to run the application instead of the built-in asp.net development server. 1. In the solution explorer, right click on the project and select "Properties" 2. Click on "Web" tab 3. Select "Use Local IIS Web Server" radio button 4. Notice that the Project Url is set to http://localhost/MVCDemo by default 5. Finally click on "Create Virtual Directory" button //configuring iis to run mvc application.png Run the application, and notice that the URL is "http://localhost/MVCDemo/" Now change the URL to "http://localhost/MVCDemo/Home/index" In the URL "Home" is the name of the controller and "Index" is the method within HomeController class. So the improtant point to understand is that the URL is mapped to a controller action method. Where as in web applications, the URL is mapped to a physical file. For example, in a web application, if we have to display the same message. 1. We add a webform and in the Page_load() event include Response.Write("Hello from ASP.NET Web Forms Application"); 2. We then access WebForm1.aspx as shown below http://localhost/WebFormsApplication/WebForm1.aspx 3. The Page load event gets executed and the message string is displayed.

Let's boost service innovation!

03:11
Sweden has long been fantastic at developing, manufacturing and selling things. We have built up an export sector and enjoyed the steady growth that has contributed to building the society we have today. But what is happening in the outside world? Fewer and fewer people work in production. What previously required hard work and nimble fingers is now automated. Our challenge is to use the resources that are being liberated to further develop Sweden for the future and create further economic growth and export. One thing that is in demand in the world today is the advanced packaging of services and solutions. Let's say for example that we in Sweden take on the challenge of creating a city with the world's best health care. Such a mission would attract the brightest experts and stimulate the development of advanced services. Though the actual medical treatments would be carried out around the world, we could export the prescription for a healthy city. If we succeed, our services will be in demand worldwide, since there is the potential to expand the service sector on many levels. If we focus on developing service innovation, other types of services will also become more in demand. Our consulting expertise in knowledge-intensive areas will be more sought after. As more people want to travel to the standard-setting country of Sweden, either as tourists or to attend business meetings, this will also create new jobs. There is also the potential to increase the market for services, which provide solutions linked to a product. Instead of just exporting buses, solutions can be delivered that keep them rolling in the city without interruption. But the key is to focus on services, which are aimed at packaging complex types of services and solutions, such as the route to the model city and a sustainable society. We should therefore not just export vehicles but also complete transport solutions. We're not just selling phones but also complex communication solutions. And we should not only export environmentally friendly products, but also the approach to a sustainable society. We want to boost service innovation by organizing research, supporting key projects, increasing skills in the area and working for a society focused on the promotion of innovation, rather than inhibiting policies and regulations. We live in a small country where we have a long tradition of helping each other to achieve results. And if both small and large companies, together with the public sector in Sweden work together to develop services, our exports will continue to flourish. With our strong expertise in the service sector we can: package complex solutions for the future, deliver functional solutions and take advantage of the fact that basic services get a boost. With strong service delivery, sales of our leading products continue to grow. If we are successful, we can continue to improve our society - also in the future.

Vehicle-mounted concealed garage

Small Project of Patent Invention, Big Reformation of Automobile Proctection At present, the whole structure and performance of automobile have had a fixed pattern. Some new designs are modified based on basic thing. Most domestic automobile technology are introduced from abroad, lack of independent innovation. Actually, all of the automobile manufacture factory and automobile designers are thinking how to create conception automobile or new function design that is more novel, more practical and more acception for consumers, breaking through present design idea. At present, all of automobiles home or abroad could not protect themselves automatically after leaving automobile factory, and they should be protected and maintained passively in 4s shop. The invisible automobile mantle that can be telecontrolled to expand and contract automatically, vehicle invisible garage for short,is a new patent project which has been approved by State Patent Bureau of China. At present, there is no similar product or design at home or abroad. The device hidden inside the automobile can cover automobile automatically through telecontrol, changing the original way of covering automobile artificially which wastes time and strength. The new technology of automobile product domain will bring huge economic profit and managing feature for enterprises, and grab more market management proportion once it is sold in market. The device is hidden inside of automobile, so there is not any influence for other function. The device has wireless telecontrol function and handles easily. Further more, the device has function of rainproof, UV protect, anti-hail and it can reduce times of washing automobile, achieving the intention of saving resources and protecting environment. The product has three main characters. Ⅰ. Practicability There are high, middle and low three levels for automobiles. The low level automobiles almost have no garage, so they can only stop in the open air and can not protect themselves when it rains or wind blows. If set the product, the automobile body can be protected at any time. Even though the high level automobiles have garage, it is hard for them to find a cool place to stop in summer when they go out. The owner of automobile will feel very hot and afflictive when they enter in the automobile again. If set the product, the owner of automobile can cover the automobile at any time. Like the sunshade for automobile, it can provide comfortable driving environment for drivers through making the inside temperature under 26 centigrade and the automobile's overclothes can be decorated with advertisement, cartoon picture or any picture that you like. Then the automobile stopped at the roadside will become a landscape. Formerly, there are automobile overclothes, but lots of owners of automobiles don't use them because covering the automobile is hard. With this product, covering the automobile becomes convenient and fast. Covering the automobile not only can protect the automobile body, reduce the times of washing automobile, save water resources, but also have the function of theftproof through stopping the thief peek. Ⅱ. Novel The product has got the patent approval of the State and there is no similar design or product at home or abroad. So the product will attract more consumers to purchase once it is sold in market. For example, at the press of new car, the emcee usually takes off the cover cloth with hand to show the new car. With this product, the emcee can handle with remote control to make the automobile overclothes retract into the inside of automobile like transformers. The product will create huge influence and will become essential function. Ⅲ. Profit In the big cake of automobile market profit, this technology is still in the blank phase. Once it is popularized, the profit made by the technology will be huge, and it can make a new industry chain. In the new industry chain, produce and sell, and develop the market of vehicle sparepart and recreational vehicle at the same time, establish in domestic market and develop international market at the same time, and create Chinese Made in China brand. Hong Kong Design students' rags-to-riches story

03:18
Every day in Hong Kong, about 200 tonnes of textile waste - last season's fabric sample books and leftover cloth - are dumped into the city's overflowing landfills. Hong Kong Design Institute students are putting these 'rags' to good use, collecting them from factories that discard them, working with the disadvantaged to manufacture products they design, and selling them through social enterprises to donate the profits to charity. In the institute's fashion design classroom, scraps of fabric collected from textile factories are strewn across all available surfaces. It is up to students like Toby Yan to come up with creative ideas to transform them into attractive products. Toby made use of some denim leftovers to design a collection of square coasters. He chose to embroider a colourful Chinese character on each coaster, each with a positive meaning such as 'support', 'beautiful' and 'like'. and in hand: Hong Kong Design Institute student Becky Sin visits sheltered workshops frequently, to teach mentally-disabled students sewing techniques. Hong Kong teens regularly use these terms when chatting online, he said, and he wanted people to feel good when they set their drinks on the coasters. Student Becky Sin and her classmates came up with a design for drawstring tote bags made of linen - with a pair of trousers drawn on them. The idea was derived from memories of women factory workers in the 1960s and 1970s who had to work hard and 'tighten their belts' during difficult times. Life lessons - Becky also visits sheltered workshops frequently, to teach students with intellectual disabilities different sewing techniques they can use to create the products she and her fellow students design. She appreciates their positive attitude and good work ethic. "Their sewing technique is better than mine. I've tried to sew a coaster. It is really difficult, and I hurt my fingers and made a lot of mistakes, taking half an hour to complete only one quarter of it. A mentally disabled student who started after I did performed much better," she said. Becky also monitors the products' sales at two social enterprise shops - Redwhiteblue in Prince Edward, operated by the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, and Green Ladies Secondhand Shop in Wan Chai, run by St James' Settlement. She helps to display the products in the showcases, and listens to customers' comments about the products, to tweak and improve their design. For example, the coasters were not best sellers, so students modified the design to make them into pin-on badges instead. Some students also volunteer to model their creations for photographs to promote them. The whole process is a valuable learning experience, Becky says, to help prepare them for a career as a professional designer. Mutual benefits - Project leader and institute lecturer Jo Lau said the project, which was introduced in 2011, sprung from the idea of 'up-cycling'. "In our project, we add value to some scraps from textile factories and transform them into products for sale. We completely change the value of the original material, and this is up-cycling," she said. "We also help our students to learn that something assumed to be of no use can be usable, and that someone believed to be incapable of working can actually be a capable employee," she said. While people disadvantaged with mental disabilities may lack creativity or a sense of design, and design students have few platforms to manufacture their products or showcase their designs, bringing them together to achieve a target benefits both sides, she said. Everyone involved can consider it a "win win win" situation -- all profits from sales of the products, which range in price from $55 to $180, are donated to charity.
