Biomimicry design, explained with 99% Invisible. Check them out here: https://99percentinvisible.org/ Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Japan’s Shinkansen doesn’t look like your typical train. With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. Razor USA, the company best known for introducing the world to the Razor Scooter back in 2000, gives us an example of product development, and what it takes to bring their products to market. Billy Griggs, a retired BMX racer and product developer at Razor, talks about the inspiration and challenges of creating toys and how a Tormach machine helped. From design, to prototype, the machining process is a large part of what it takes to brings products like the Razer Scooter to consumers. With CNC capabilities, Razor is now able to create multiple prototype examples to try out and form a proof of concepts on what they want to move forward with. There’s lots of levels to product development, but with the right tools, the process can get sped-up to cut back on lead times bringing the products to market. Through multiple stages and cycles products take years to create, but the can be very rewarding come launch time. Being able to see the work you have done play out and fall in the consumers hands is about as good as it gets. Download the free Guide to Project Planning: http://bit.ly/2ezQ13v At its core, a project brief should communicate your project approach and the process your team will use to manage the project according to scope. If it’s handled with care and great consideration, a good brief should act as an agreement on project goals, scope, major deliverables, milestones, timing, activities, process, and even resources needed to deliver your product. If you take the time to create a good process around how your project brief and plan is built, and you consider all of those factors, you can create a great plan that will work for everyone. With the right amount of background information on your project’s scope and requirements, and with a good level of input and collaboration with your team and your clients, you can make a solid, workable plan that will guide everyone through your project, and it doesn’t have to be difficult to create. To many people, a project plan is a dry document that lists dates. To people who are invested in your project, the plan is the project guide that will dictate how you will get to project milestones, decisions, and eventually project completion. At a minimum, a project plan answers some basic questions about the project. Look at it this way: your plan should educate any reviewer— coworkers and clients included—on the logistics of the project. They trust that you’ve got this, so when reviewing the document, they truly believe that you’ve considered every possible risk. And if you have, it feels good to know that you’ve done a good job and you’re trusted. The first step in creating a good plan is writing up a good project brief to go over with the client. We’ve put together an example of a project brief in our free “Guide to Project Planning“, for you to download and use. And when you’re ready to create your Gantt chart, you’ll want to use the best and easiest web-based Gantt chart software out there. The next very important tool or concept I have illustrated in this video is “Quality Function Deployment (QFD)”. This is also called as “Matrix product planning”, “Decision matrices”, and “customer-driven engineering.” QFD is a focused methodology for carefully listening to the voice of the customer and then effectively responding to those needs and expectations. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) is a process and set of tools used to effectively define customer requirements and convert them into detailed engineering specifications and plans to produce the products that fulfill those requirements. As I have explained in the video, here is a link for QFD related information on Quality-one site: https://quality-one.com/qfd/ I had explained this tool with various terms in it and detailed procedure to use this tool by example, which will be very easy to understand. I am sure you will like it.

This 2 part series shows the process of bringing our contemporary ships ladder into being. It talks about designing and fabricating a ships ladder in steel, how we worked with our architect and fabricator, and the installation process. Part 1 talks about the how I thought about the design in the context of our home. Part 2 talks about the final design, fabrication and installation. If you are looking for ideas about designing a modern ships ladder or staircase design in steel, there should be cross over information in this video. Big thanks to discrete and discrete (westeelthings.com) for their amazing fabrication services and Gene Mastrangeli (architect). The architects who worked on our house renovation were David Lieberman and Gene Mastrangeli. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments.
