Conservation Agriculture: helping small farmers

04:30
Conservation agriculture (CA) aims to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture and subsequently aimes at improved livelihoods of farmers through the application of the three CA principles: minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotations. CA holds tremendous potential for all sizes of farms and agro-ecological systems, but its adoption is perhaps most urgently required by smallholder farmers, especially those facing acute labour shortages. It is a way to combine profitable agricultural production with environmental concerns and sustainability and it has been proven to work in a variety of agroecological zones and farming systems. It is been perceived by practitioners as a valid tool for Sustainable Land Management (SLM).

Natueco Farming follows the principles of eco-system networking of nature in our farming system. It is different from organic or natural farming both in philosophy and practice. It offers an alternative to the commercial, heavily chemical's techniques of farming. Prayog Pariwar has demonstrated that dissemination of relevant and often sophisticated science can be achieved in the local idioms of the common man. With a new techniracy (technical literacy) for the management of soil, water, and canopy of leaves, it promises record assured yields with minimal external inputs and optimal harvesting of sunlight. http://www.natuecofarmingscience.com/

Larissa Behrendt - Environmental Sustainability: what we can learn from Aboriginal Culture

08:21
"The concept of sustainability has always been central to Indigenous cultures' - Larissa Behrendt (of the Eualeyai/Kamillaroi people) talks about the lessons derived from her Indigenous culture relating to climate-change, environment/sustainability, Aboriginal totems and customs, wisdom and the principles of connectedness. 'I'd like to see the Indigenous cultures of Australia become the central cultures of this country, that all Australian feel that Indigenous cultures are part of our heritage.' In order to achieve this, Larissa advocates the need to protect Indigenous culture within a culture of human-rights. Peter Doherty - Nobel Prize Laureate - mentions the importance of hunter-gatherer societies. About Larissa: Professor of Law and Indigenous Studies at the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning, University of Technology, Sydney, Larissa is also a practising Barrister who has previously worked with the United Nations. She is currently Chair of National Indigenous Television, Director of Bangarra Dance Company and is on the board of the Museum of Contemporary Art. SRI Farming in Cambodia (pt1)

05:48
The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is an organic method of increasing the yield of rice. The method was developed in the 1980s by Henri de Laulanie in Madagascar. The Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC) was set up in August 1997 to develop sustainable agriculture and rural development in Cambodia. CEDAC introduced SRI in 1999, and director Dr. Yang Saing Koma experimented with the method on his own farm in 2000. Later that year, 28 farmers volunteered to test SRI. There are now more than 100,000 farmers using the SRI system. In the first part of this series, you will learn about preparing the rice seeds for planting using the SRI method. For more information about SRI farming in Cambodia and the work of CEDAC, please visit http://www.cedac.org.kh

Natural Sequence Farming at Spring Creek, ANU Masters student Nick Streeton reports (HQ)

08:44
Natural Sequence Farming (NSF) is a holistic land management initiative developed by Mr Peter Andrews in the Upper Hunter Valley in the 1970s that seeks to reintegrate stream flow and floodplain processes to sustainably drive production and nature conservation outcomes. The Lake Cowal Foundation (LCF) undertook the first NSF trial project in the Australian semi-arid zone in 2006 and has been working closely with many partners on this project since then. Two Masters students from the Australian National University (ANU) have done research on this project since its inception. In 2009, Nick Streeton from ANU, sponsored by the LCF completed his masters on the development of an upstream sediment budget for Spring Creek. This is an interview with him at the completion of this Masters.

Woody Tasch: Complete Interview

29:26
In this complete interview, Author Woody Tasch illustrates the concept of Slow Money. He describes how the current economic crisis evokes fundamental questions about the future of capitalism and provides a unique opportunity to reorganize financial markets for sustainability. He explains the simple notion that if we slow down, we can enjoy life more, and challenges us to bring this concept into financial markets. Woody Tasch is chairman and president of Slow Money, a 501c3 formed in 2008 to catalyze the flow of investment capital to small food enterprises and to promote new principles of fiduciary responsibility to support sustainable agriculture and the emergence of a restorative economy. Woody pioneered the integration of asset management and philanthropic purpose in the 1990s as treasurer of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation and was founding chairman of the Community Development Venture Capital Alliance. For ten years, through 2008, he was chairman of Investors' Circle, a network of angel investors, funds, family offices, and foundations that has invested $133 million in 200 sustainability-promoting ventures and venture funds, since 1992. Woody is the author of Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered (Chelsea Green Publishing Company).

Michael Levine: The Meaning of Sustainable Branding

03:42
Signing onto sustainability principles are less the issue than the successful integration of these principles into daily operations, says Levine of Epstein, Becker, & Green. The important consideration for companies, he says, is "Are you prepared to address sub-standard conditions?" This was part of the Carnegie Council event "Sustainable Branding: A U.S.-Japan Corporate Dialogue" that took place on September 17, 2009.

Mysterious Nepalese Farming Techniques Thrive in New Zealand

03:06
Situated in the beautiful Akatarawa Valley 30 minutes outside of Wellington, New Zealand is Mandi Lynn's blueberry farm. A 26-acre certified organic paradise. Mandy is full of bubbles and absolutely passionate about what she's doing. She acknowledges destiny has brought her here and she's not turning back. Mandy started off not knowing anything about her trade when she arrived on the farm five years ago from America, but had the dream. [Mandy Lynn, Blueberry Farmer]: "I'd never have thought in a million years I'd be in New Zealand as a blueberry farmer. I was trained to be a nurse." She wasted no time and read books on organic farming principles, permaculture and biodynamics. Time passed, the seaons changed and the crop was doing all right. But Mandis berries reached new heights after a Nepalese sherpa from Mount Everest with a mysterious farming technique turned up on her doorstep. [Mandy Lynn, Blueberry Farmer]: "When Nima first started talking to me about this I was like, what? It just seems so crazy, I mean I'd read about it, but I was like ah…this sounds like a lot of voodoo, you know. And eh…the first year we did it I was like…I went in to go mow the lawn about a month afterwards and I was like, oh my God! The growth was just insane, I'd never seen it before." Where Nima came from he had never seen a blueberry. But he just sort of has this way with plants, that and a very special recipe. [Mandy Lynn, Blueberry Farmer]: "This is a piece of poop that's been stuck in a cow horn and it comes out and it's only an amount like this, a small amount and it's kind of homoeopathically stirred." But this isn't their only method of success. It took every crop famer's worst nightmare to invent the next. [Mandy Lynn, Blueberry Farmer]: "The first year that we bough it we had a 100 year flood rip through and it was about a six foot wall of water." But with the flood came a new, primitive, but smart solution: partially hand weeding around the root of the plant instead of removing all the weeds. [Mandy Lynn, Blueberry Farmer]: "This method we developed after the flood because when we had gone in and diluted everything the ones that we done that to got washed down the stream. The ones that had the weeds left on them just kind of swayed even the berries stayed on. I have no idea how it happened." As for the future of the farm well as long as it stays afloat Mandi and Nima will be here, sharing the fruits of their success with visitors and anyone else wanting a little Mt. Everest style know how. Gina Shakespear, NTD, Wellington, New Zealand.

MDA Teaches Students About Rain and Erosion

03:17
http://www.mda.state.mn.us Thanks to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), students get a first hand look at how different soil coverage can have a dramatic impact on the amount of erosion taking place on farm fields. MDA Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Mark Zumwinkle demonstrates the department's rainfall simulator. The machine is designed to mimic a natural rainstorm on three different types of soil conditions: bare soil, soil with a cover-crop and soil covered with woodchip mulch. Students are able to observe the amount of runoff, soil splash and erosion on each type of soil. The MDA also has a larger version of the rainfall simulator it uses to assist farmers, researchers, extension, and state agency staff with designing and implementing on-site farm research to study the interaction of rainfall and various tillage systems, including water retention and runoff. Simulated rainfall is a primary tool used on farms to assess tillage management effects on soil and water quality.
