Peter Andrews, who was featured several times on ABC TV's Australian Story, has developed a system called Natural Sequence Farming. This system is capable of restoring Australia's landscape to sustainable and profitable produtivity, while simultaneously allowing for the sequestration of vast amounts of carbon dioxide. This video shows a scale model of how the NSF system can quickly repair serious erosion problems, and prevent them recurring.

Conservation agriculture (CA) aims to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture and subsequently aimes at improved livelihoods of farmers through the application of the three CA principles: minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotations. CA holds tremendous potential for all sizes of farms and agro-ecological systems, but its adoption is perhaps most urgently required by smallholder farmers, especially those facing acute labour shortages. It is a way to combine profitable agricultural production with environmental concerns and sustainability and it has been proven to work in a variety of agroecological zones and farming systems. It is been perceived by practitioners as a valid tool for Sustainable Land Management (SLM).

On Friday, October 30, Andres Duany, a founding principal at Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, spoke about agricultural urbanism as part of Houston Tomorrow's Distinguished Speaker Series. Agricultural urbanism, Duany explained, is different from urban agriculture. Agricultural urbanism creates a walkable urban form surrounded by large-scale food production, while urban agriculture simply refers to growing food in empty lots or backyards. Natueco Farming follows the principles of eco-system networking of nature in our farming system. It is different from organic or natural farming both in philosophy and practice. It offers an alternative to the commercial, heavily chemical's techniques of farming. Prayog Pariwar has demonstrated that dissemination of relevant and often sophisticated science can be achieved in the local idioms of the common man. With a new techniracy (technical literacy) for the management of soil, water, and canopy of leaves, it promises record assured yields with minimal external inputs and optimal harvesting of sunlight. http://www.natuecofarmingscience.com/

Permaculture designer and teacher Darren Doherty discusses ways in which permaculture design presents potential solutions to transitioning broad acre agriculture to more regenerative and sustainable forms of production. While much of the permaculture practiced in the states is expressed in smaller scale operations, there is great potential and need to identify strategies for transitioning larger-scale farm operations.

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is an organic method of increasing the yield of rice. The method was developed in the 1980s by Henri de Laulanie in Madagascar. The Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC) was set up in August 1997 to develop sustainable agriculture and rural development in Cambodia. CEDAC introduced SRI in 1999, and director Dr. Yang Saing Koma experimented with the method on his own farm in 2000. Later that year, 28 farmers volunteered to test SRI. There are now more than 100,000 farmers using the SRI system. In the first part of this series, you will learn about preparing the rice seeds for planting using the SRI method. For more information about SRI farming in Cambodia and the work of CEDAC, please visit http://www.cedac.org.kh

In this complete interview, Author Woody Tasch illustrates the concept of Slow Money. He describes how the current economic crisis evokes fundamental questions about the future of capitalism and provides a unique opportunity to reorganize financial markets for sustainability. He explains the simple notion that if we slow down, we can enjoy life more, and challenges us to bring this concept into financial markets. Woody Tasch is chairman and president of Slow Money, a 501c3 formed in 2008 to catalyze the flow of investment capital to small food enterprises and to promote new principles of fiduciary responsibility to support sustainable agriculture and the emergence of a restorative economy. Woody pioneered the integration of asset management and philanthropic purpose in the 1990s as treasurer of the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation and was founding chairman of the Community Development Venture Capital Alliance. For ten years, through 2008, he was chairman of Investors' Circle, a network of angel investors, funds, family offices, and foundations that has invested $133 million in 200 sustainability-promoting ventures and venture funds, since 1992. Woody is the author of Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money: Investing as if Food, Farms, and Fertility Mattered (Chelsea Green Publishing Company).

http://www.mda.state.mn.us Thanks to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), students get a first hand look at how different soil coverage can have a dramatic impact on the amount of erosion taking place on farm fields. MDA Sustainable Agriculture Specialist Mark Zumwinkle demonstrates the department's rainfall simulator. The machine is designed to mimic a natural rainstorm on three different types of soil conditions: bare soil, soil with a cover-crop and soil covered with woodchip mulch. Students are able to observe the amount of runoff, soil splash and erosion on each type of soil. The MDA also has a larger version of the rainfall simulator it uses to assist farmers, researchers, extension, and state agency staff with designing and implementing on-site farm research to study the interaction of rainfall and various tillage systems, including water retention and runoff. Simulated rainfall is a primary tool used on farms to assess tillage management effects on soil and water quality.

Our current food system invests 10 calories of fossil energy to get 1 calorie of food energy out. We import more than 40% of our food. As oil and gas supplies dwindle this will present problems. In the city we are reliant on supermarket distribution chains, but supermarkets only hold enough food to feed us all for three days, leaving us "nine meals away from anarchy" should our imports be interrupted.

A guide to Home-Scale Permaculture - Toby Hemenway, author of Gaias Garden A guide to Home-Scale Permaculture. Tobys book (for the past 6 years) has been the worlds best-selling book on permaculture, a design approach based on ecology for creating sustainable landscapes, homes, communities, and workplaces. He is also an adjunct professor in the School of Graduate Education at Portland State University, Scholar in Residence at Pacific University, and a biologist consultant for the Biomimicry Guild. Toby teaches, consults, and lectures on permaculture and ecological design throughout the US and other countries. His writing has appeared in magazines such as: Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. He lives in Portland, Oregon, where he is developing sites and resources for urban sustainability. Make plans to purchase your copy of Gaias Garden at the Roundup. Toby Hemenway will be our Friday keynote speaker. Tobys talk is titled, How Permaculture Can Save Humanity and the Earth, but not Civilization and will explain what permaculture is and how it can help us to live sustainably. Pulitzer-prize winning author Jared Diamond calls it the worst mistake in the history of the human race. Founder of permaculture Bill Mollison says it can destroy whole landscapes. Are they describing nuclear energy? Suburbia? Coal mining? No. They are talking about agriculture. Its not just that farming in its current industrial manifestation is destroying topsoil and biodiversity. Agriculture in any form is inherently unsustainable. At its doorstep can also be laid our cultures split between people and nature, much disease and poor health, and the origins of class inequality and police states. Those are big claims, and this lecture will explore them, showing that new fuels and high technology are not the way out of the dilemma that agriculture has gotten us into. However, there are ways to live sustainably on the Earth without going back to the Stone Age. Many societies have lived in harmony with other species and yet have developed art, music, philosophy, medicine, and the other hallmarks of a rich culture. What many of them have in common looks a lot like what today is known as permaculture, an ecological design approach based on knowledge gained from nature. Tobys lecture will show us what makes agriculture, and the industrial society that relies on it, fundamentally unsustainable, and how permaculture offers us a better way.
