Every kid needs a champion | Rita Pierson

07:49
Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level. The Absurdity of Detecting Gravitational Waves

09:07
A head-vaporizing laser with a perfect wavelength detecting sub-proton space-time ripples. Huge thanks to Prof Rana Adhikari and LIGO: http://ligo.org Here's how he felt when he learned about the first ever detection: https://youtu.be/ViMnGgn87dg Thanks to Patreon supporters: Nathan Hansen, Donal Botkin, Tony Fadell, Saeed Alghamdi, Zach Mueller, Ron Neal Support Veritasium on Patreon: http://bit.ly/VePatreon A lot of videos have covered the general overview of the discovery of gravitational waves, what they are, the history of the search, when they were found but I wanted to delve into the absurd science that made the detection possible. When scientists want one megawatt of laser power, it's not just for fun (though I'm sure it's that too), it's because the fluctuations in the number of photons is proportional to their square root, making more powerful beams less noisy (as a fraction of their total). The smoothest mirrors were created not for aesthetic joy but because when you're trying to measure wiggles that are a fraction the width of a proton, a rough mirror surface simply won't do. But that dream evaporated when Johnson suffered a life-changing injury that left his right arm paralyzed. More to dying than meets the eye: Martha Atkins at TEDxSanAntonio 2013

12:02
Those who work with the dying are familiar with patients seeing long deceased loved ones, angelic beings, even hearing music and comforting voices as the patient nears death. Deathbed phenomena have been documented in the days, weeks, and months before death since the 1500s. Often confused with hallucinations, deathbed phenomena can bring comfort to patients and caregivers if those involved know what they are experiencing. This talk will explain deathbed phenomena and present on-going research about the topic. Accounts from the dying and bedside witnesses will be shared. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. What makes a good therapist? | Kati Morton | Kati Morton

04:26
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY We talk often about how therapists and other mental health professionals can be terrible at their jobs, but today I want to offer up some ways to know if you are seeing a good therapist! 1. You feel like you are on the same team and that they are trustworthy. This is important for building the therapeutic relationship and knowing that they are someone we can talk to and who wants to help us. 2. Healthy boundaries! you knew this one was coming! Boundaries are SO very important in therapy because it keeps you and your therapist emotionally safe. It also ensures that therapy is a safe place for you to be challenged and work through all of the tough things that you may not have been able to work on before. 3. Your therapist is a clear communicator. It is so important that they are able to clearly tell you what's going on, what you are working on, and directly communicate with you anything they are concerned about. Communication is the key to therapy as a whole. 4. They can help thoughtfully explain and help you understand all that you are feeling (ie. your symptoms). This can be so validating! Having someone finally put into words all that we may have been going through. This is so important in therapy, and I believe every good therapist should be able to do this as they get to know you and hear what you are struggling with. 5. Works with you to develop a clear treatment plan. This ensures that you aren't wasting your time or money in therapy. We should always be working on clear goals with our therapist and not just talking to fill the space. Checking in is okay for the first few minutes, but then you should turn your focus to your treatment goals. Having a treatment plan helps keep us on track! 6. They clearly communicate progress being made and check into see that you agree. It's so important to know that we are making progress in therapy. Otherwise, we can get so lost and not motivated. Having a therapist check in on progress made can keep us motivated and focused on our treatment goals. Please share! You never know who may need this helpful information! xox Other therapy videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTssf-PDoME https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FiVVAOXiEQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBj0qJ6bcIg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ystGdduzG64 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-47TA1N6i3s https://youtu.be/ZEGplNtXD2w https://youtu.be/6nEL44QkL9w https://youtu.be/vo4pMVb0R6M PLEASE READ If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call a local emergency telephone number or go immediately to the nearest emergency room. Bill Gates: Teachers need real feedback

10:22
Until recently, many teachers only got one word of feedback a year: "satisfactory." And with no feedback, no coaching, there's just no way to improve. Bill Gates suggests that even great teachers can get better with smart feedback -- and lays out a program from his foundation to bring it to every classroom. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. I changed a lot of my preconceptions, specifically I thought: 1. That the Earth's magnetic field was a passive thing - it shouldn't need a continuous input of energy to maintain itself (that seemed reasonable to me because the magnetic field has been around for a long time and it seems mostly stable). But as it turns out, the Earth is a giant electromagnet, and so of course those currents dissipate their energy as they encounter resistance in the liquid metal through which they flow. So the energy to continuously create these currents comes from the kinetic energy of the liquid metal flows in the Earth's outer core. 2. If it's convection, I'm thinking hot things rising, cooler things falling. But apparently the main effect driving convection is the compositional differences at the boundary with the Earth's inner core. This is because of the differential freezing at the boundary. Things like iron freeze into the inner core, while elements like sulfur do not. Hence the pockets of lighter material which then rise outwards. 3. I didn't get why the fluid motion was necessary for the generation of the magnetic field. I mean if it's a conducting liquid, it can conduct currents whether it moves or not. But the key is that the liquid metal can 'trap' magnetic fields. I imagine this like how iron channels magnetic fields. Then once these fields are channeled, they can be pulled and stretched, making more magnetic field. 4. Fluids operate very differently in rotating frames of reference. This is something I didn't intuitively grasp. But, as fluids move from the inner core outwards, those particles are moving much more slowly in the direction of rotation than the matter that has been there for a long time, which means the convection currents get deflected and form helices. 5 "Impossible" Things That Can Happen On Other Planets

07:24
A lot of things happen on Earth, but there are still some things that just don't ever happen here. But, that doesn't mean that what's impossible here is impossible everywhere else in the universe. Whether it's clouds that rain rocks or glass, wind that's 29 times faster than sound, having 2 shadows or even being able to fly in some places, this is a collection of some of the most ridiculous places that we know of so far in our strange universe. This video was done in a collaboration with Second Thought, and you can check out his video here! World's Roundest Object!

11:44
The world's roundest object helps solve the longest running problem in measurement -- how to define the kilogram. Support Veritasium on Patreon: http://bit.ly/VePatreon A kilogram isn't what it used to be. Literally. The original name for it was the 'grave', proposed in 1793 but it fell victim to the French Revolution like its creator, Lavoisier. So begins the tale of the most unusual SI unit. The kilogram is the only base unit with a prefix in its name, and the only one still defined by a physical artifact, the international prototype kilogram or IPK. But the problem with this definition has long been apparent. The IPK doesn't seem to maintain its mass compared to 40 similar cylinders minted at the same time. The goal is therefore to eliminate the kilogram's dependence on a physical object. Two main approaches are being considered to achieve this end: the Avogadro Project and the Watt Balance. The Avogadro project aims to redefine Avogadro's constant (currently defined by the kilogram -- the number of atoms in 12 g of carbon-12) and reverse the relationship so that the kilogram is precisely specified by Avogadro's constant. This method required creating the most perfect sphere on Earth. It is made out of a single crystal of silicon 28 atoms. By carefully measuring the diameter, the volume can be precisely specified. Since the atom spacing of silicon is well known, the number of atoms in a sphere can be accurately calculated. This allows for a very precise determination of Avogadro's constant. Special thanks to Katie Green, Dr. David Farrant, the CSIRO, and the National Measurment Institute for their help. Thanks also to Nessy Hill for filming and reviewing earlier drafts of this video. There is debate as to whether this is truly the roundest object ever created. The Gravity Probe-B rotors are also spherical with very low tolerances such that they may in fact be rounder. How Microwaving Grapes Makes Plasma

08:16
A bisected grape in the microwave makes plasma. But how does it work? A grape is the right size and refractive index to trap microwaves inside it. When you place two (or two halves) close together the fields interact with each other creating a maximum of electromagnetic energy where they touch. This creates heating, sparks, and plasma, which is further fed with energy directly by the microwaves. Huge thanks to Hamza Khattak, Prof. Pablo Bianucci and Prof. Aaron Slepkov (unavailable for the call) for chatting to me and helping me understand the physics of this cool phenomenon. The 25 COPING SKILLS Everyone MUST HAVE! | Kati Morton

10:45
Order my book today! ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY I think it would be cool to do a video like "25 coping skill ideas" I spent a lot of time trying to find healthy coping skills and as usual over thought it to the point I figured there was no other skills I could do I really wanted to talk about this question because I mention coping skills all the time, yet I am pretty sure I haven’t ever defined it or given you some ideas or options to help you get you started. First, let’s define coping skill: A coping skill is any characteristic or behavioral pattern that enhances a person's adaptation. Meaning that if we feel stress all the time, we can create these defense mechanisms, or coping skills to help us better manage or lessen the stress. These can be distraction techniques or tools to help us process through all that we may be feeling. Due to the 2 types of coping skills, I am going to break these into 2 sections. The first section will be all distraction techniques! So let’s jump into these techniques! Going for a walk - Getting some fresh air, moving your body and getting away from any of your unhealthy coping skills (like self injury tools, food to binge on, or alcohol to drink) can be a great distraction! Painting your nails! - This works if you struggle with purging, self injury, as well as many other issues. It makes us focus on one thing, and then we can’t do much with our hands until it dries. And by then, maybe the intense stress or urge to act out has passed. Blowing bubbles - yes I know children love this, but adults can too! It’s actually really relaxing to watch the bubbles grow and burst. I even have my patients imagine their issue is that bubble and when it pops let the bad or stressful thoughts go away too. Read a good book or listen to a wonderful audiobook. Exercise! Obviously this can only be done if it’s okay with our doctor and body. But moving and exercising regularly can lower our blood pressure, releases endorphins which can help boost our mood and reduce any pain we may be feeling. Deep breathing or breathing techniques. My breath of fire video: https://youtu.be/aT74nms0SBo Watching your favorite show or video series. Draw or doodle! Color! Duh! You knew this one was coming. I love to color, and it is just such a great distraction. There’s something about the feeling of a crayon or colored pencil on paper that is so relaxing to me. So maybe give it a try and see if it works for you! Do a crossword puzzle - or really any puzzle that you like. Writing down some positive or motivational quotes and sticking them up all over your house. Cleaning you house Playing music or even creating new playlists! And with that! Let’s move into the processing type of coping skills! Write a friend a nice card - Call or text a friend (calling is preferred) Impulse logs! Use feelings charts! Journaling - You knew this one was coming :) Sign up for my journal text club! https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ Feeling word collage - I have talked about these before too, but these are a great way to process through an emotion we may be experiencing. Write down 2-3 things you like about yourself and your situation. Talking to a therapist! Taking stock of how an emotion feels in our body Write a letter to our younger or older self. Write letters to those who are upsetting us still (but never send them) you can of course tear them up or burn them or whatever, but it can help to get out all that you have been wanting or needing to say but never got the chance. Please help transcribe and/or translate this video! http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?tab=2&c=UCzBYOHyEEzlkRdDOSobbpvw PATREON Do you want to help support the creation of mental health videos? https://www.katimorton.com/kati-morton-patreon/ JOURNALING & MOTIVATION TEXT SERVICE Let’s get started: https://create.getpurple.io/p/katimorton/ I have launched a new tool to help you journal & stay motivated.
