Le Payaco - Chcel som letieť balónom (tape)

04:28
A song taken from the upcoming vinyl release of Le Payaco's newest album, Dnes je ten deň (Today is the day). The CD version has been already released, and the band wanted to do a vinyl version as well. I was involved in the mastering process, when we transferred the album from digital (Pro Tools) to tape, which was then sent to SST Brüggermann for lacquer master production, and finally, MPO in France will press the records. This is the first copy of a song from the master tape.

Fleetwood Mac - Little lies (vinyl) + lyrics

04:04
From the album "Tango in the night" which was released in 1987. The audio was not altered in any way, except for normalization and a 48dB/oct highpass filter at 30 Hz. Equipment used: Elektronika B1-011 turntable (Thorens TD125 + SME3009 copy made in USSR in 1980) with an Audio Technika AT91E cartridge, Revox B250 amp (used only as a phono preamp here), M-Audio MobilePre USB sound card, a MacBook Pro for video editing and an iPhone 4S as a camera. Uploaded for educational use and criticism only. Disclaimer: this recording is not intended to be a copyright infringement and it should be classified as for fair use, since it is supposed to show the qualities of vinyl records and the music released on them, in order to support sales.

Deep Purple - Highway Star (master tape)

06:11
UPDATE 16th of February 2018: Please don't ask for direct uploads, or even analog copies of this tape. I'm not going to fulfill it, sorry. Of course, this tape is not directly the master tape, but rather a copy of a copy sent out to a vinyl pressing plant. This recording has never seen digital equipment prior to digitizing it, in order to be able to upload it here. The sound quality is still better, than anything I heard.

František Krištof Veselý - Len bez ženy môže byť človek blažený (shellac)

03:09
I was after this shellac for quite a while, but I couldn't find it. One day, a friend of mine pointed out that there's one for sale in a Facebook group, and as you can hear, it's in very good condition. Released in 1939. Audio processed with a declicker and a 48dB/oct highpass filter at 25 Hz.

Daft Punk - Get Lucky (vinyl)

06:14
So, today I got lucky, since I found a delivery note in my mailbox and it turned out I had this awesome album waiting for me at the post office. The album's name is Random Access Memories and if you like the electronic/disco music of the '70s and '80s, you will definitely enjoy it. The audio goes straight out from my Leema Elements Phono preamp to the input of my M-Audio MobilePre MkII audio interface, no processing or enhancement was done on the audio track, apart from normalizing it, then converting the 24 bit recording back to 16 bit, due to YouTube limitations.

Első Emelet - Óvatosan lépkedj

A song by the Hungarian synthpop group Első Emelet (First Floor) from 1984. Sorry for the static picture instead of video, but my laptop is being repaired and my spare one is too weak for editing 1080p video.

Helen St. John - Love Theme From Flashdance (vinyl)

03:54
https://www.discogs.com/Various-Flashdance-Original-Soundtrack-From-The-Motion-Picture/master/97313 Meet my Revox B795 turntable. Don't worry, the Technics is not gone, and it's not going anywhere soon :) I discovered this TT for sale on a Facebook group, and the seller was asking €200 for it. Well, I sent him a (quite low) offer, which he (surprisingly enough) accepted. The unit will soon undergo a full recap, and I might replace the AT95 with something better, although I'm very impressed by the sound of this cartridge - I never heard it to play this good. Equipment used: Revox B795 turntable, Audio Technica AT95 cartridge, NAD PP-1 phono preamp, M-Audio MobilePre mkII USB audio interface

A while ago fellow YouTuber HiFisquarepants uploaded the same song, so I decided to upload it as well for a comparison. Same pressing of the same album. Audio equipment involved: Dual 701 direct drive turntable with Shure V15-III cartridge, Revox B250 preamp, M-Audio MobilePre USB sound card.

Pink Floyd - Money (master tape)

06:41
UPDATE 16th of February 2018: Please don't ask for direct uploads, or even analog copies of this tape. I'm not going to fulfill it. If you really want a great sounding version, buy the MFSL Ultradisc, or the HDtracks digital download. Here's the sequel to the teaser video I made about the copy of the Dark Side of the Moon master tape, which most likely originates from Jugoton. Of course, this tape is not directly the master tape, but rather a copy of a copy sent out to a vinyl pressing plant. This recording has never seen digital equipment prior to digitizing it, in order to be able to upload it here. The sound quality is still better, than anything I heard. Also, you might recognize the Otari MX55 in this video. I used to own this exact machine, but then I sold it. Now I bought it back, it has been recalibrated using Audio Precision gear, and when the guy who did the calibration showed me the results, I was blown away. It can do 20 Hz to 25 kHz (-2dB) at 0dB (320nWb/m) at 15 ips (38,1cm/s), with a phase error of +/-5 degrees at 10kHz.

Pink Floyd - The Great Gig In The Sky (LP)

04:41
Uploaded for educational use. The 4th song from Pink Floyd's 1973 album, Dark Side of the Moon. Unfortunately I don't know where the antiskating weight is gone from my other turntable, so I had to use my Tesla NC470 (NAD 5120) instead. The vinyl is an '73 pressing from India.

Studer A807 test recordings at different speeds

04:29
I've recorded some (higly repetitive) music with my A807 on three of its four speeds. I couldn't do 30 IPS (76,2 cm/s) as I don't have a calibration tape for that speed, so I can't calibrate the machine. Listen yourself how do different speeds compare to each other and also to the original source file. The recording was not edited in any way other than cutting and volume adjustment, so the loudness won't mislead you. No noise reduction or any kind of other wizardry used during recording, playback or editing in digital form. Tape: Maxell UD XL50-120B

Etta James - At Last (tape)

03:15
Recorded from a 2012 re-release of her album "At Last!" with my Studer A807, played back with my Elektronika B1-011 turntable fitted with an Audio Technica AT91 cartridge. My Revox B250 amp was used as a phono preamp. http://www.discogs.com/Etta-James-At-Last/release/3583417 Disclaimer: this recording is not intended to be a copyright infringement and it should be classified as for fair use, since it is supposed to show the qualities of vinyl records and the music released on them, in order to support sales.

The Midnight feat. Nikki Flores - Jason (cassette)

05:34
Take an Alpine AL-80 deck from 1981/82, a BASF LH Extra I cassette from 1984, and some appropriate music from 2016, and the result is an instant transformation back into the middle of the 1980s. This time the audio was recorded at 96kHz 24bit with a Roland R26 audio recorder, since I borrowed it from work for an other project.

http://www.discogs.com/Adele-Skyfall/release/3979304 Wanted to do this upload for quite some time... first I didn't have the record, then I didn't have the time. Today I had both :-D The audio hasn't been processed apart from getting the levels right. 04:26
Second video shot with my own DSLR, hooray! :) Well, I just couldn't pass on a lightly used (5200 expos) Nikon D3100 for €150, I put my 18-70mm Nikkor lens on it (the kit lens of the D70) and here you go :) This is the exact release I got: http://www.discogs.com/Depeche-Mode-Violator/release/46905 The audio was not processed in any way. Equipment used: Audio Technica AT-LP120 turntable, Shure M97xE cartridge, Leema Acoustics Elements Phono preamp, M-Audio MobilePre mkII USB soundcard and my PC to put it all together :) Disclaimer: this recording is not intended to be a copyright infringement and it should be classified as for fair use, since it is supposed to show the qualities of vinyl records and the music released on them, in order to support sales.

Toto - Africa (vinyl)

04:55
This video was uploaded for fellow YouTuber "Gato Cat" as I mentioned him that I'd do an upload of this song from the Japanese pressing of Toto IV I own. http://www.discogs.com/Toto-Toto-IV/release/2370904 As usual, there is no audio processing, the signal from the Shure M97xE went straight to the Leema Acoutics Elements Phono Preamp, and from there to my M-Audio MobilePre mkII USB audio interface. The sound was recorded with Adobe Audition, the video was taken with a Nikon D3100 + Nikkor 18-70mm DX lens. Sorry, but my video editing software screwed up the lipsync of the clip to the music... and since the rendering/encoding took 30 minutes, I was way too lazy to redo it again :D Gato Cat's channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCYcS06faN2o3a6fgS5vgCIQ Disclaimer: this recording is not intended to be a copyright infringement and it should be classified as for fair use, since it is supposed to show the qualities of vinyl records and the music released on them, in order to support sales.

Martika - Toy Soldiers (vinyl)

05:26
Attention! It might be my last vinyl related video on YouTube if it gets blocked. I've got a channel on Vimeo as well, just go to vimeo.com/attilasvk This is a dutch pressing of Martika's 12" single "Toy Soldiers" recorded in 1988, but released in January of 1989. If you listen closely, you can hear some master tape print-through after the needle drops into the groove. There is a typo on the record label, it says "TOY SOLIDER". http://www.discogs.com/Martika-Toy-Soldiers/release/1874757 The audio was not processed in any way. Equipment used: Audio Technica AT-LP120 turntable, Shure M97xE cartridge, Leema Acoustics Elements Phono preamp, M-Audio MobilePre mkII USB soundcard and my MacBook Pro to put it all together :) Shot with a Nikon D3200. (it was dusty, but my Nagaoka brush did its job very well, as you can hear) All the tech stuff is the usual, modded AT-LP120 with a Shure M97xE, Leema Acoustics Elements Phono preamp, M-Audio MobilePre mkII USB sound interface, Nikon D3100 + Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S DX PS: that Yamaha 01V desk was not in the signal path when I was recording

Richard Müller & Banket - Tlaková Níž (vinyl)

04:45
This is one of the most known songs of the Slovak singer Richard Müller, although back then he was a member of the synth pop group Banket formed in 1984 in Bratislava. They disbanded in 1991, however most of the members are still active musicians, including Müller as well, who got also popular with his solo career. The audio wasn't processed in any way apart from adjusting the levels, then downsampled to 44100 Hz and 16 bits. (originally it was 176400 Hz and 24 bits, but YT won't handle that). Equipment used: modded Audio Technica AT-LP120USB turntable (the phono preamp / USB card has been completely removed and proper plugs + grounding screw have been added to the back), Ortofon Concorde 30 cartridge with a brand new 20 stylus, Leema Elements Phono preamp, M-Audio Audiophile 192 sound card. During my weekend visit in Budapest I discovered this album in a second hand record store which I often visit and I just could not leave this gem there :) Again, the audio setup is the usual, except for the phono preamp, which is the built-in one in my Sony TA-F261R amp.

Attention! It might be my last vinyl related video on YouTube if it gets blocked. I've got a channel on Vimeo as well, just go to vimeo.com/attilasvk I had a czechoslovak pressing of this album from my mother, but I lent it to a friend of mine. After half a year I politely asked him to return the record, but he said he doesn't have it, as he already returned it to me. Of course that was a lie and of course he's not my friend anymore. Anyways, I bought this dutch pressing at a record fair last weekend for €9, and it sounds much better :) http://www.discogs.com/Men-At-Work-Cargo/release/3262510 The audio was not processed in any way. Nirvana - Come As You Are (vinyl)

03:38
https://www.discogs.com/Nirvana-Nevermind/release/4801560 Just a quick and dirty video, so I would not leave you without content :) I'm having difficulties with assembling my own phono stage, since I can't get 390nF WIMA MKP capacitors in Slovakia, and to order them from abroad is costly, however I have no other possibility. The same applies for the 866 ohm resistors - since both are in the feedback loop determining the RIAA curve, I have to use the exact values... For now, I used my NAD PP-1 phono stage, and my Behringer UCA-200 USB audio interface, since my M-Audio is not at home. I hope you will enjoy the song despite the lower quality (compared to what is expected from me)

Madonna - Love Don't Live Here Anymore (vinyl)

05:03
http://www.discogs.com/Madonna-Like-A-Virgin/release/5099628 Who said that Balkanton releases don't sound good? :) I was quite intrigued by this album, which belonged to a friend of mine, he offered it for sale and I bought it. Instead of uploading a classic hit, I decided to go for this less known song, as I really liked it. Although it's a "One Shot Friday" video, I decided to dome some extra takes and editing, just for fun. I also added the DR meter result as well. As usual, the sound was left intact apart from normalization and then converting the 24 bit audio to 16 bit.

Sandra - Little Girl (blue vinyl)

03:35
http://www.discogs.com/Sandra-Ten-On-One-The-Singles/release/366899 It was maybe the last vinyl issue of this album, released by Gramofonové Závody (known as GZ Vinyl or GZ Media today), in the second half of 1990. It's one of the small number of albums, where GZ was not only the manufacturer, but the publisher as well - that's why they have their logo on the label. And obviously, it's blue :D (I believe this is the only issue on coloured vinyl) While digital technology was readily available in 1990, and even in 1987, when the master was produced, this record was cut from analog source. The proof is the -311 suffix of the catalog number and that luxurious dropout roughly where the fade out begins :)

Sorry, no discogs link at the moment, as I need to find out which one is my exact release :) Wanted to do an upload of this song for quite some time, and given the fact I did shoot the video last weekend, then only thing it required is to finish the editing. Also, it's the test of the Sony AVC codec as I found it's much quicker to render using this codec, than with the MainConcept one. When using CPU only rendering, I get 80% realtime speed, and when I turn on GPU acceleration through CUDA, the result is 94% realtime speed at 24fps. (the graphics card is a GeForce GTX680, the CPU is an Intel Core i5 4960K overclocked to 4 GHz)

Mark Knopfler - Privateering (vinyl)

06:22
http://www.discogs.com/Mark-Knopfler-Privateering/release/3838768 Meet my new cartridge, the Audio Technica AT13EaV. What makes it special is the new old stock ATN14Sa stylus with the Shibata tip, which arrived yesterday, but I had time to get it at the post office only today. The ATN14Sa is intended for the AT14Sa, but it fits the AT13EaV body as well. The AT-14Sa is the predecessor to the AT-140LC, which evolved into the AT-440MLa. Sorry for the video being out of focus in the first three quarters, the autofocus in live view mode sucks on the Nikon D3100. The audio was not edited in any way, apart from normalization to -0.1dBFS, then converting the 24 bit audio back to 16 bit. Attention! Due to YouTube's approach to the vinyl community, the next upload will be the last vinyl related video on this channel. Be sure to check out my channel on vimeo.com/channels/648973 I've replaced my turntable with this lovely Lenco L75. The cartridge is a Grado Prestige Red1, which has a slight hum, but I'll try a different one soon... (it's on its way to me) discogs.com/Miles-Davis-Kind-Of-Blue/release/2506823 The audio was not processed in any way. Equipment used: Lenco L75 turntable, Grado Prestige Red1 cartridge, Leema Acoustics Elements Phono preamp, M-Audio MobilePre mkII USB soundcard and my MacBook Pro to put it all together :) Disclaimer: this recording is not intended to be a copyright infringement and it should be classified as for fair use, since it is supposed to show the qualities of vinyl records and the music released on them, in order to support sales.

Falco - Vienna Calling (vinyl)

http://www.discogs.com/Falco-3/release/1087260 I heard the album for the first time almost 20 years ago, when I was 6 or 7 years old, and when I started collecting records, I wanted to have it on vinyl as well. Took me a few years to get a mint copy on red vinyl for a reasonable price, but there it is :) Enjoy! Turntable: Pioneer PL200 Cartridge: Piezo YM108 MM Preamp: Revox B250 Sound card: M-Audio MobilePre mkII Recorded at 48kHz 24bit, no audio editing was done in the analog or digital domain, apart from normalizing the levels.
