Aspen Ideas Festival, 2009. In Me of Little Faith, Lewis Black offers a ferociously funny exploration of how the rules and constraints of faith and religion have affected his life and the lives of us all. "Quite simply," says Black, "this is a book about my relationship to religion and how I arrived at whatever vague sense of religion I have. It's how I stumbled along my spiritual path and what I bumped into along the way." And he has bumped into plenty. Black describes his hilarious experiences with rabbis, Mormons, gurus, televangelists, psychics, and even the joy of a perfect round of golf, and uses them as a jumping-off point to expound upon what we believe and why-in the language of a shock jock with the heart of an iconoclast. McCloskey Speaker Series – New Theories on the Origin of Life with Dr. Eric Smith

01:05:56
Featuring Dr. Eric Smith, professor at the Earth-Life Science Institute in Tokyo and the Santa Fe Institute. For most of the 20th century, complex biological views of evolution have been central to the way scientists think about the origin of life. But progress over the past 40 years in such fields as ocean exploration, microbiology, and planetary science has come together to suggest that life's origin may have been built on a core chemical blueprint. Dr. Smith argues that we need a new understanding of the nature of life, in which the dominant, Darwinian view of a “struggle for existence” comes second, and life at its core came about as a necessary layer of our maturing planet. Eric Smith began scientific work in high-energy physics, with Bachelor degrees in math and physics from Caltech, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1993. His work moved increasingly into topics in complex systems, during appointments in the University of Texas and the Los Alamos National Laboratories, culminating in eleven years spent at the Santa Fe Institute. At SFI he began parallel threads of work in non-equilibrium thermodynamics, economics and finance, and the history of human languages, and began studying the geochemistry, biochemistry, and evolution of the earliest life. He is currently a professor and Principle Investigator of the Earth-Life Science Institute in Tokyo, and external professor at SFI. His goal is to understand the origin and nature of the living state through the many windows that science provides on it: the physical, geochemical, biochemical, ecological, and evolutionary.

Infidelity and the Future of Relationships

01:00:20
Esther Perel is recognized as one of the most insightful and provocative voices on personal and romantic relationships and the complex science behind human interaction. The author of the international bestseller Mating in Captivity, Perel believes that the most traditional aspects of a culture and the most progressive and radical changes in a society take place around sexuality. Much of Perel’s work—both lecturing internationally and advising couples in her private therapy practice—centers on the topic of infidelity. Why do happily married couples cheat? Why does the modern egalitarian approach to marriage quash desire? Are the heightened expectations we bring to modern love combined with our pursuit of happiness directly related to infidelity? Join her and NPR’s Hanna Rosin for an insightful discussion about the future of relationships.

Space Time Ripples and Einstein's Legacy

Headline news was made earlier this year when the detection of gravitational waves, caused by the collision of two black holes, was confirmed by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). One hundred years old, the theory continues to astonish scientists with how correct it is. LIGO’s discovery signals a new era of astronomy and a new way of understanding the warped side of the universe. Ira Flatow, Moderator Janna Levin Nergis Mavalvala Lisa Randall

Expanding Our Horizons: Matter, Space, and the Universe

This session explores the almost unfathomable scales of theoretical physics, from the mysterious properties of dark matter to the depths of our universe and beyond. Experiments, like the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva that smashes together protons at high energies, tell us about the smallest length scales we can observe today while measurements of the universe stretch our observations of large length scales to their limits. Theoretical physicists like Lisa Randall tie the results of these experiments to mysteries about our universe. Professor Randall will tell us about the Higgs boson discovery and its implications. She will also explore possibilities for the nature of dark matter and of space itself. Can there be an unseen extra dimension in our universe? Theoretical physics truly knows no bounds
