Nourishing the World 🌍, Organically 🥗 - The Story of Sylvia Kuria!

02:24
Sylvia Kuria, an organic farmer from Kenya 🇰🇪, shares the story of her organic farm. "I’ve got so many reports where they say, you know, your kale, your spinach, your carrots are so sweet. I tell them it’s because they are just growing in the natural way that they were supposed to have grown. We are not altering anything about the plant. It is just growing the way it is supposed to be and that is why it is that tasty." - Ms. Sylvia Kuria 🔎 LEARN MORE about Sylvia Kuria entrepreneurship activities: Organic farmers such as Sylvia Kuria work with nature to produce food with more healthy nutrients, fewer food additives, and no harmful pesticides. When farming the land, they use diversification strategies such as intercropping techniques and crop rotation; giving the communities they feed greater access to a more diversified diet. www.sylviasbasket.co.ke Women farmers play a fundamental role in ensuring food security, particularly in rural societies, but lack of access to training and resources often results in yields up to 30% lower than those of male farmers. Although women are responsible for about half of the world’s food production, female nutrition indicators, across all age groups, are worse than those of their male counterparts. https://www.ifoam.bio/en/news/2017/04/07/go-organic-world-health-day 💻 CHECK OUT the personal stories from organic farmers and updates from organic projects working on the ground to build change on our blog Organic Without Boundaries: Women Farmers – Gatekeepers to Food & Nutrient Security! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/04/04/women-farmers/ Improving Livelihoods of Rural Communities in East Africa with Organic Agriculture https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/11/rural/ Winners of the Organic Farming Innovation Award 2017 https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/11/awards-ofia-2017/ 📩 SUBSCRIBE to our blog ORGANIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES for informative articles: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/subscribe/ 📲 SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel to watch organic stories from the field. 💚🌱⚖️🤲🏼 Health, Ecology, Fairness, Care - Principles of Organic Agriculture!

01:08
Principles of Health, Principles of Ecology, Principles of Fairness, Principles of Care are the roots from which Organic Agriculture 🚜 grows and develops. They express the contribution that Organic Agriculture can make to the world. Composed as inter-connected ethical principles to inspire the organic movement - in its full diversity, they guide our development of positions, programs and standards. Agriculture is one of humankind’s most basic activities because all people need to nourish themselves daily. History, culture and community values are embedded in agriculture. The Principles apply to agriculture in the broadest sense, including the way people tend to soils, water, plants, and animals in order to produce, prepare and distribute food and other goods. They concern the way people interact with living landscapes, relate to one another and shape the legacy of future generations. The Principles of Organic Agriculture serve to inspire the organic movement in its full diversity. They guide IFOAM’s development of positions, programs, and standards. Furthermore, they are presented with a vision of their worldwide adoption. 📥 DOWNLOAD the Principles of Organic Agriculture brochure: https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/poa_english_web.pdf 🖱 BROWSE different translations of the Principles of Organic Agriculture: https://www.ifoam.bio/en/translations-principles-organic-agriculture 🔎 LEARN MORE about: 💚 Principles of Health https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-health 🌱 Principles of Ecology https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-ecology ⚖️ Principles of Fairness https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-fairness 🤲🏼 Principles of Care https://www.ifoam.bio/en/principles-organic-agriculture/principle-care 💻 CHECK OUT our blog posts highlights important aspects of Organic Agriculture: How Organic Agriculture Can Help Achieve Food Security & Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/10/03/food-security/ How Collecting data can promote the Growth of Organic Agricultural https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/08/15/data-collection-promote-organic/ How to Restore the Broken Food System Through Organic Agriculture! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/07/16/restoring-broken-food-system/ How to Convince Your Policy-Maker to Support Organic Agriculture! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/03/29/policy-maker-support-organic-agriculture/ Improving Livelihoods of Rural Communities in East Africa with Organic Agriculture https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/11/rural/ Sikkim Chief Minister Celebrated for going 100% Organic https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/06/sikkim-chief-minister/ 📩 SUBSCRIBE to our blog ORGANIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES for informative articles: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/subscribe/ 📲 SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel to watch organic stories from the field. Organic farmers speaking out for organic agriculture at COP21, December 2015 Paris

02:47
We took a delegation of farmers to speak out for organic agriculture at the COP21 climate negotiations, December 2015, in Paris. The talks culminated in 195 countries committing to limit the global temperature increase to well below 2°C and the pursuit of efforts to keep it under 1.5°C. From April 22 2016, countries have a year to sign the document and follow-up on commitments made in Paris. In this video you will hear what Julie from Uganda, Goodson from Zambia and Francisco from Chile have to say about how climate change is affecting farmers and the messages they send to decision-makers.

🚯🚫 Dr. Vandana Shiva speaks out against the merger of Bayer & Monsanto!

02:04
Dr. Vandana Shiva, Navdanya speaks out against 🗣 the merger of Bayer & Monsanto - “We have to make the planet organic by 2050. The bees 🐝 need it, the birds 🕊 need it. Our children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 need it.” On 25 May 2018, crowds gathered to protest 🚯 the Bayer/Monsanto merger at the Bayer Shareholders' meeting in Bonn, Germany 🇩🇪. Using the proxy vote 🔖 of a Bayer Shareholder, Thomas Cierpka, Deputy Director at IFOAM - Organics International voiced the objections many have to the proposed merger. "Dear Chairman, Management and Shareholders, My name is Thomas Cierpka. As Deputy DIrector, I am speaking on behalf of IFOAM – Organics International and the global organic movement. This year, once again Bayer is doing very well financially. It is neither exaggerated nor presumptuous to say "Bayer is rich and Bayer has power!" Wealth and power, though, come with obligations and responsibility. Looking at the increase in dividends and also at the enormous societal and environmental challenges of the world, I am struck by how many pressing problems you could alleviate with so much money. I therefore urge you to waive all dividend payments to shareholders and management and ask you to invest in the future of our planet and generations to come. Let me be more precise and make reference to the goals you mention in your Sustainability Report on your website." 📖 READ MORE about the Bayer and Monsanto: https://www.ifoam.bio/en/news/2018/05/24/speaking-out-organic-movement-bayer-shareholders-meeting-stop-bayer-monsanto https://www.ifoam.bio/en/news/2018/05/23/stop-merger-bayer-monsanto https://www.ifoam-eu.org/en/news/2018/02/26/say-no-merger-monsanto-and-bayer https://www.ifoam-eu.org/en/news/2018/04/17/european-commission-gave-green-light-bayer-monsanto-merger https://www.ifoam.bio/en/news/2017/04/24/bayer-monsanto-keep-your-fingers-our-food https://www.ifoam.bio/en/news/2016/06/30/opposing-bayer-and-monsanto-merger-fight-gm-free-agriculture-must-be-strengthened https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wdLn32_NwA https://www.navdanyainternational.it/en/events-navdanya-international/380-stop-bayer-monsanto-germany https://organicactionnetwork.bio/2017/06/02/markus-arbenz-direttore-esecutivo-di-ifoam-organics-international-parla-a-nome-del-movimento-del-biologico-allassemblea-dei-soci-bayer/ 💻 CHECK OUT our blog posts highlights important aspects of Organic Agriculture: Facilitate the Growth of Organic by Ending Subsidies for Chemical Inputs https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/10/10/chemical-inputs/ The Toxic Trail of Glyphosate – and The Organic Methods to Manage Weeds https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/09/19/glyphosate/ Learn More About the Damage Caused by Pesticides https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/07/11/damages-caused-by-pesticides/ Choose Organic – The Best Way to Avoid the Dirty Dozen https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/05/09/organic-produce/ How Organic Agriculture Helps Mitigate Climate Change https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/09/12/climate-change-mitigation/ Looking at food Quality from a Holistic Point of View https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/09/26/food-quality/ 📩 SUBSCRIBE to our blog ORGANIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES for informative articles: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/subscribe/ In our work around the globe we come across remarkable stories of remarkable individuals who work to make our world more sustainable. ☀️⛈❄️ How To Win Battle Against Climate Change - Grow Food, Organically

02:08
Organic can help mitigate climate change 🌪⚡️🌧 – as well as helping farmers to adapt to changing climate conditions. https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/09/12/climate-change-mitigation/ The current food system is responsible for at least a third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, when it comes to GHG emissions, the agricultural sector is second only to the energy sector. Agriculture is a major contributor to emissions of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2). On a global scale, agricultural land use in the 1990s has been responsible for approximately 15% of all GHG emissions. One-third of all carbon dioxide emissions come from changes in land use (forest clearing, shifting cultivation and intensification of agriculture). Approximately two-thirds of methane and most of nitrous oxide emissions originate from agriculture. At the same time, agriculture offers options to reduce GHG significantly. One is to reduce emissions and, thereby, to minimise the production of atmospheric CO2, CH4, and N2O. Agriculture shares this emission reduction potential with industry and other sectors. The second option consists in systematically sequestering carbon dioxide in soils and in plant biomass. It is unique for all types of land use. 📹 This video talks about the causes of this and how shifting to Organic Agriculture can help in the battle against climate change. Organic Agriculture can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. As a viable alternative to shifting cultivation, it offers permanent cropping systems with sustained productivity. For intensive agricultural systems, it uses significantly less fossil fuel in comparison to conventional agriculture. This is mainly due to the following factors: - Soil fertility is maintained mainly through farm internal inputs (organic manures, legume production, wide crop rotations etc.), - Energy-demanding synthetic fertilizers and plant protection agents are rejected, and - External animal feeds - often with thousands of transportation miles - are limited to a low level. 🔎 LEARN MORE about Organic Agriculture and Climate Change: Role of Organic Agriculture in Mitigating Climate Change https://www.ifoam-eu.org/sites/default/files/page/files/role_of_oa_migitating_climate_change.pdf How Organic Agriculture Counters Climate Change https://www.ifoam.bio/en/advocacy/climate-change Climate Change: Legislative Background, https://www.ifoam-eu.org/en/farm-food-environment/climate-change 📥 DOWNLOAD: Organic Farming, Climate Change Mitigation and Beyond – Reducing the Environment Impacts of EU Agriculture https://www.ifoam-eu.org/sites/default/files/ifoameu_advocacy_climate_change_report_2016.pdf Climate Action in the Land Sector: Trading Carefully https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/clara_action_in_the_land_sector_final.pdf Infographics about Climate Change https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/a1_infographic_poster.pdf Organic Agriculture & Healthy Soils https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/oa_and_soils_web.pdf 📂 DISCOVER MORE about Organic Agriculture Countering Climate Change: https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/ifoam_climate_change_eng_web.pdf https://www.ifoam.bio/en/ifoam-organics-international-cop23 📧 GET IN TOUCH for more information: [email protected] 💻 CHECK OUT the personal stories from organic farmers and updates from organic projects working on the ground to build change on our blog Organic Without Boundaries: Pacific States Lead by Example on Climate Change by Going Organic! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2017/12/11/climate-disasters/ What Will I Tell Njoki https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/04/25/sustaining-livelihoods/ Innovation in Action: A Sustainable Alternative to Slash and burn Agriculture! https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/04/19/innovation-burn-agriculture/ 📩 SUBSCRIBE to our blog ORGANIC WITHOUT BOUNDARIES for informative articles: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/subscribe/ 📨 SUBSCRIBE to our Newsletters, Special Announcements, and Press Releases to stay informed about the uptake of organic around the world: https://www.ifoam.bio/en/get-involved/sign-receive-organic-news 📲 SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel to watch organic stories from the field. #GoodFoodForAll #MakeEuropeSustainableForAll #OrganicWithoutBoundaries

Dr. Vandana Shiva, Navdanya speaks out against 🗣 the merger of Bayer & Monsanto - “We’ve worked here to put Monsanto on trial for its crimes against the Earth 🌎, its crimes against Biodiversity , its crimes against our Children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦, its crimes against the Future 🔮, its crime of trying to own and patent life 🌱 and spread poisons 💉 like Roundup known to be carcinogens. We know we can farm better without their poisons. If there is going to be a future for humanity it will have to be organic. But did you know that when they farm sustainably, they do so much more?” “Say hello to Alice. She mainly grows carrots – but she is also a Protector of Soils.” A handful of soil has more living organisms than there are people on planet Earth – and they form a delicate ecosystem that keeps the soil fertile. By farming organically, she works with nature to grow good food in healthy soil rather than using chemicals that harm it. This is Pavel. He might look like a regular guy, but he’s a Guardian of Biodiversity. He knows that healthy fields should be teeming with life, from birds and bees to ladybirds and earthworms. So, he doesn’t use toxic pesticides which harm wildlife and drive them from their natural habitat. That’s why organic farms are home to 30% more species than conventional farms. Here’s Maria. She’s a Defender of the Earth! Beyond the field, nitrogen runoff from chemical fertilizers is also contaminating oceans, rivers, and lakes. It is killing fish and other aquatic life. By using compost wisely and avoiding nitrogen surplus, Maria is defending the earth’s water resources, keeping them safe for fish to live in and for us to drink from. By farming sustainably, these superheroes, together with thousands of others are keeping our plates full of good food, our wildlife safe and the planet healthy. “Let’s celebrate our superheroes! Farmers who farm sustainably, working with nature, not against it.” #GoodFoodForAll #MakeEuropeSustainableForAll #OrganicWithoutBoundaries

🇰🇭 How the Engagement in Organic Agriculture & PGS 📋 has Changed Farmers’ Lives in Cambodia

15:54
🎥 The video showcases the activities of the organic farmers 👩🏽‍🌾 and how the engagement in Organic Agriculture and Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) has changed their lives within the region of Kampong Speu, Cambodia. 0:14 PGS Stories From The Field 📰 1:24 CEDAC & FAO Joint Collaboration 🤝 5:15 PGS Testimonial 1 🎙 5:55 PGS Testimonial 2 🎙 6:32 PGS Testimonial 3 🎙 7:25 PGS Aforementioned Objectives 📊 8:55 PGS Testimonial 4 🎙 9:31 PGS Case Study 📃 11:36 PGS Testimonial 5 🎙 13:24 About CEDAC 🖼 The Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC) is supporting the development of Participatory Guarantee System (PGS). 🎞 This video was funded by the FAO produced by CEDAC in cooperation with ADB, Greater Mekong Subregion – Core Agriculture Support Program. 0:14 PGS Stories From The Field PGS is a certification system created for assuring an agreement in producing organic standards products with the active participation of farmers, consumers, rural consultants, and authorities. In order to build a foundation of trust amongst consumers and general society Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC) organic agricultural practices (producers) has cooperated with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to implement a project entitled “Small-Scale Farmer Inclusion in Organic Agriculture Development through Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS)” having the registered number TCP/RAS/2510 funded by FAO. The project has a duration of 20 months starting from October 2015 to May 2017 with 3 main objectives as the following: 1. To raise awareness of farmers about PGS. 2. To form organic product producer groups with the certification from PGS and registration in Google map. 3. To raise awareness of potential consumers about PGS-certified products. 5:15 PGS Testimonial 1 I join the Organization and grew vegetable. I can earn much more and I can save with Saving Community. I bring vegetables three times a week. Working with the organization is better than before. I earn more money since joining the organization and I can afford for daily life. Joining the program lead by CEDAC is beneficial both growing and selling especially we use only natural fertilizer for our vegetables. 5:55 PGS Testimonial 2 We don’t use chemical fertilizer to grow our vegetable. We get the fertilizer produced by Bio-digester. Before working with CEDAC’s program we usually bring the products to market in Phnom Penh but after we join the program we get more support at other markets. We are really happy. Our vegetable is not difficult to sell and consumers like it. 6:32 PGS Testimonial 3 Using chemical fertilizer and natural fertilizer may get the same result but using the chemical one cost much more than using the natural. The natural fertilizer just made from animal excrements and tree’s leave so needs low cost. People Nowadays like a natural vegetable so we decide to join CEDAC’s program to grow it naturally that helps communities in selling agricultural products. We have a community in local markets and it helps us to sell products. All our vegetable sold when it reaches the market because today people want to buy natural vegetable than the vegetable that grows by using chemical fertilizers. 8:55 PGS Testimonial 4 I commit to growing vegetable following CEDAC’s program that is popular in the market. Now we can make more money to support our family. Our vegetable is very good. It can be kept as long as a week and it wouldn’t spoil. We are very happy with CEDAC’s program helps us to create a community to buy agricultural products. Thanks, CEDAC for the help. We can’t wait the day of selling our vegetable. 11:36 PGS Testimonial 5 I would like to recommend to all farmers to create groups to sell products. Also, farmers can cooperate with organizations or other partners to get training related to agricultural products. Moreover, I would like to recommend Cambodian women to build their own ability and should be brave to become strong women in the community. 🔎 LEARN MORE about the PGS: https://www.ifoam.bio/en/organic-policy-guarantee/participatory-guarantee-systems-pgs https://www.ifoam.bio/en/internal-control-systems-ics-group-certification https://www.ifoam.bio/en/pgs-basics https://www.ifoam.bio/sites/default/files/pgs_definition_in_different_languages.pdf 📧 GET IN TOUCH for more information: [email protected] 💻 CHECK OUT personal stories from organic farmers on our blog Organic Without Boundaries: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/tag/participatory-guarantee-systems/ 👍🏻 Follow US on Facebook & Twitter: https://www.facebook.com/ifoam.organic https://twitter.com/IFOAMorganic ☑️ GET INVOLVED by joining the organic movement: https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/get-involved/ 📥 DOWNLOAD all previous Newsletters for free: https://www.ifoam.bio/en/pgs-updates

IFOAM 40th Anniversary Celebrations

06:30
The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, better known as IFOAM, came to life in Versailles, France, on November 5, 1972. It all started during an international congress on Organic Agriculture organized by the French farmer initiative Nature et Progrès. There were five founding member organizations: the Soil Association (UK), the Biodynamic Association (Sweden), the Soil Association of South Africa, Rodale Press (USA) and Nature et Progrès. 40 years on, IFOAM has grown to a membership of 870 affiliates in over 120 countries. The IFOAM Directory 2013 can be found here: http://goo.gl/d2Jjux On November 26, 2012, IFOAM hosted a 40th anniversary celebration at its Head Office in Bonn.

How Organic Farming Help to Break the Cycle ⭕ of Chemicals 🌡 & Debt💰

05:01
Organic farming helped Mr. Keo Nov (PGS-organic farmer in the Kandal Province of Cambodia 🇰🇭) to break the vicious cycle of chemicals and debt. https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/04/18/pgs-cambodia/ Together with his wife, they farm approximately 1,200 square meters of land, nearly a third of an acre. They have been managing their farm organically for about 5 years, growing over 20 kinds of vegetables 🍆🥒🌶🥕which they eat and sell. Their four children now all attend school. “We had a lot of issues with chemical farming. We did not feel very comfortable spraying the food we wanted to eat with so many harmful substances. Now, the bad health effects have disappeared since we stopped using chemicals.” - Mr. Keo Nov This story is based on the result achieved through a Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations (FAO) pilot project Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP/RAS/3510) “Small-Scale Farmer Inclusion in Organic Agriculture Development through Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS)” and the joint collaboration with IFOAM – Organics International, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Earth Net Foundation (ENF) and grassroots organizations. 🎥 This video was produced in cooperation between FAO and IFOAM – Organics International under the FAO TCP. PGS is not to be confused with Internal Control Systems for group certification (ICS), another certification tool promoted by IFOAM to support smallholders. https://www.ifoam.bio/en/internal-control-systems-ics-group-certification 🔎 LEARN MORE about the Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS): PGS are locally focused quality assurance systems. 🌿🌴🌳 Soil. A Solution 💡 to Climate Change? #GoodFood4All

02:00
Looking for a solution to climate change? We have one 💡. Not at our fingertips 🙌 but at the tips of our toes 👣https://www.organicwithoutboundaries.bio/2018/11/30/world-soil-day-2018/ December 5 2018, is World Soil Day, when we celebrate the importance of healthy soils. This year’s theme is ‘Be a solution to soil pollution’. Happy World Soil Day 🎉 Soil Pollution is a worldwide problem which degrades our soils, poisons the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. Every minute of every day the equivalent of 30 football fields of fertile soil is lost, partly due to irresponsible farming practices. This is having a huge impact on food security, public health, and well-being, as well as our planet. The good news is sustainable farming practices can heal the soil, build soil fertility, and also increase carbon capture in the soil. Dusík z chemických hnojiv uniká z polí a znečišťuje oceány, řeky a jezera. Zabíjí ryby a další vodní organismy. Maria využívá uvážlivě kompost a nedodává do půdy příliš mnoho dusíku. Tím chrání vodní zdroje, aby v nich mohly žít ryby a my z nich mohli pít. Tito superhrdinové – a tisíce dalších zemědělců – svým ekologickým počínáním zajišťují talíře plné zdravého jídla pro všechny, bezpečí pro naše živočichy a zdraví pro naši planetu. „Pojďme oslavit naše superhrdiny! Zemědělce, kteří hospodaří ekologicky a pomáhají přírodě – neničí ji.“ #GoodFoodForAll #MakeEuropeSustainableForAll #OrganicWithoutBoundaries
